DESCRIPTION
This vaccine contains a freeze-dried live attenuated strain of Houbarapox virus grown in tissue culture. It is presented as a freeze dried form and each 0.5 mL dose contains 10⁷·⁰ TCID₅₀/mL of Houbarapox virus. The vaccine also contains 0.00961g/mL of Minimum Essential Medium (MEM) [a buffered salt solution containing vitamins and aminoacids], 0.084g/mL of sodium hydrogen carbonate, 0.00121g/mL of tris-base, 0.058g/mL of sodium chloride, 0.342g/mL of sucrose and 0.0189g/mL of dextran – FP40.
INDICATIONS
For the prophylactic immunization of houbara birds against Houbarapox.
VACCINATION PROGRAMMES
For houbaras of all ages, but preferentially used in young birds of 6–9 weeks old to provide individual immunity against Houbarapox.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARATION OF THE VACCINE
Reconstitute the freeze-dried material in 3.0 mL of sterile distilled water.
RECOMMENDED DOSE AND SCHEDULE
The primary course of immunization includes two vaccinations, a first dose and a second dose after 4 weeks. Each dose is 0.5 mL and should be administered by subcutaneous route to the dorsal part of the bird’s neck, observing aseptic precautions.
An annual booster immunization is required after 1 year.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS AND WARNING
There are no known health hazards associated with this product. In 1% of vaccinated houbaras, a small swelling at the injection site is observed as well as fever for only 1 day. The swelling recedes after 2 to 3 days. Houbarapox vaccine should always be administered in the dorsal part of the bird’s neck and not near the leg as it may cause lameness for a couple of days. Ideally, vaccinate birds not younger than 8 weeks. There is no previous experience with the vaccine in younger birds. However, if younger birds need to be vaccinated, vaccinate only few birds and observe for any side effects for 2–3 days.
PHARMACEUTICAL PRECAUTIONS AND STORAGE
Vaccine should be stored refrigerated (between +2°C and +8°C). Reconstituted vaccine must be used within 7 days and kept refrigerated.
PRESENTATION
Houbarapox vaccine is available in 5 glass vials and contains 6 doses of vaccine per vial.
